way -

SCENE CHRONOLOGY
As mentioned before However, in Scene Chronology,
in Scene Tag Chronology, I have used a slightly different
form –
I have used this form -
Scene .Section.Sub-Section .Sub-Sub-Section
(Note – The Full Stops)
Scene Section
Sub-Section Sub-Sub-Section
(No
Full Stops)
eg. eg.
1 .1 1 1
.1.1 1
.1.1 End
1
cont’d
.1.2 2
.1.2 End
1
cont’d
.1.3 3
.1.3 .1
1 ◄ 1
cont’d
.1.3 .1 End 3
cont’d
.1.3 End 1
cont’d
This is a more open cascading form,
where the movement between scenes
can be more easily seen.
Which
brings to light, Cycles of Scenes.
Cycles of Scenes
This is an interesting phenomenon,
where it can be seen that scenes group into various cyclic patterns.
eg.
1 1 1
2 2 1
3 1
4 1 2
2 1
SCENE INFORMATION
This takes the form –
Sc YEAR, Day No Month, Type
of scene, Time of day, Relationship to previous scene
- Brief description of scene
I have copied the Scene Tags with all their information -
Either -
Sc .Section [TYPE OF SCENE – RELATIONSHIP IN TIME TO THE
PREVIOUS SCENE]
– DAY No MONTH YEAR of this scene
[INT. &/or EXT. LOCATION OF SCENE –
TIME OF DAY]
Or –
Sc .Section [INT. &/or EXT. LOCATION OF SCENE – TIME
OF DAY, RELATIONSHIP IN TIME
TO THE PREVIOUS SCENE] – DAY No MONTH YEAR
and just reformatted it for the Scene List -
Sc YEAR, Day No Month,
Type of scene, Time of day, Relationship to previous scene
- Brief description of scene
So, the comparison in typesetting, is –
Scene Tag information Scene
information
Scene No Scene No
.Section No Section
No
.Sub-Section No Sub-Section
No
.Sub-Sub-Section No Sub-Sub-Section
No
DAY Day
No No
MONTH Month
YEAR YEAR
TYPE OF SCENE Type
of scene
RELATIONSHIP Relationship
INT. &/or EXT.
LOCATION OF SCENE
TIME OF DAY Time
of day
Brief
description of scene
GROUPING INFORMATION
I have placed Scene information on its own line, always.
eg.
17 1935, Jul, Flashback, Day, A few
days later
However,
if a group of Sections, Sub-Sections &/or Sub-Sub-Sections
have the same information,
then I have put that information on the line before the group.
eg. Two Scene Sections with the
same –
YEAR, Month, Type of
Scene, Relationship to previous Scene
5 1940, Mid Jan, Flashback, 2 years
earlier
1 Day
- Betty, not a secretary
2 Night, That night
- George about Betty
eg. Three Scene Sections with
the same –
YEAR, Day No Month, Time
of day
Two Scene Sub-Sub-Sections
with the same –
YEAR, Day No Month, Type
of scene, Relationship to previous scene
But -
When some sections have the same
information,
but, are not
chronological,
it is best to keep their
information separate, on their own line.
As is the case with the
Two Scene Sub-Sections
here
46 1942,
Fri 25 Apr, Late afternoon
1 -
Captain Robinson meets Betty
2 Jump
Cut, A minute later
–
Betty serves Captain Robinson a beer
1 1942,
Mid – Late Apr, Flashback,
Day
or night, A few days earlier
–
Kasey says Captain Robinson is a jazz freak
2 cont’d
–
Captain Robinson is billeted at Amelia’s
2 1942,
Thurs 24 April, Flashback, A day
earlier
1 Evening
-
Betty and Kasey’s first kiss
2 Night, That night
-
Betty is dreamy
2 cont’d
–
Betty intends to tell Kasey her plan,
that
afternoon
3 Jump
Cut, Half an hour later
–
Betty match-makes Amelia and
Captain
Robinson in her mind
eg. Two Scene Sub-Sections with
all of their information the same
4 1942, Early Mar, Day or
night
1 - Betty explains about her father
2 - Tom explains about his father
When a Scene or Scene Sub-Section is
continued,
only the Brief description of scene is
needed.
eg.
1 cont’d
– Ben chats up Betty
LENGTH OF SCENE
I have estimated the length of each
Scene / Scene Sub-Section / Scene Sub-Sub-Section, as –
S - SMALL 15
seconds or less
M - MEDIUM 15
-30 seconds
L - LARGE 30
seconds or more
I did this by using a stop watch to time each
Scene / Scene Sub-Section / Scene Sub-Sub-Section
as I read it out to myself,
approximating the pace of the real action.
This, I used to estimate the Total Length of Running Time of the Film.
BOOK AND SCREENPLAY PAGES
I have included the book and screenplay page numbers here again,
for the beginning of each scene, for handy reference.
These numbers, I have aligned across the page with the Scene etc. Number,
for easy visual tracking.
