Sun 12 Mar 2017 -
Dolphin Pt, Coogee, Australia.
On Sunday,
2 people (as far as I know),
fell from the cliff
at this spot pictured left
around 2pm
to the rocks below,
which is a considerable drop.
Police Rescue attended,
and then also the Ambulance Service,
as one person was brought up
the cliff face using ropes,
and then transported to hospital.
The other person died at the scene,
and was airlifted from the rocks
to the top of the cliff,
by police helicopter.
Watching all this unfold,
from possibly hearing the cry
of one person as they fell,
to events that followed,
has been a bit cathartic
for myself and others at the scene.
This is a terrible tragedy,
and I feel for
Video - Cliff Tragedy the parents of these people as they face this heavy burden.
Don't condemn the onlookers.
If emergency services
and the families involved,
want the community to care,
then they should let us be involved,
even if it's only peripherally.
To my mind,
far too many people
are climbing over the fence
and sitting on the edge of the cliff
with their legs dangling over,
on a regular basis,
just to enjoy the view.
There are signs
telling people not to,
and that it's too dangerous.
Daring the elements
has consequences,
and sometimes
as in this case,
people pay the price, needlessly.
